Frequently Asked Questions
What is Open Crane Data?
Open Crane Data is a free, open database of crane specifications including load charts, outrigger configurations, counterweight data, dimensions, and rigging specifications for over 2,000 crane models from 50+ manufacturers. All data is published in the CraneML machine-readable format under CC-BY 4.0.
What is CraneML?
CraneML is an open, machine-readable JSON-LD protocol for representing crane specifications, load charts, and lift plans. It provides a standardized format so that crane data from any manufacturer can be consumed by software systems, lift planning tools, and engineering applications. Licensed under Apache 2.0.
Is the crane data really free?
Yes. All crane specification data is published under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 (CC-BY 4.0). The CraneML protocol is under Apache 2.0. Use, modify, and redistribute freely with attribution. No vendor lock-in, no paywalls.
Does it support both metric and imperial units?
Yes. CraneML uses a canonical-metric-with-provenance model. All data is stored in metric (SI) units internally, but original values and unit systems are preserved as metadata. EN 13000 and ASME B30.5 load charts are treated as distinct, auditable datasets with full traceability.
Are 3D crane models available?
Parametric 3D crane models (glTF, FBX, STEP) are available as a premium service. The open database provides all the dimensional and specification data needed to generate models — the generation engine itself is a commercial offering. Contact us for pricing.
